Richard Brautigan died of a self inflicted gun shot wound to the head at his house in Bolinas, California in September with a .44 Magnum borrowed from a friend who had no knowledge of his intentions. Always a heavy drinker, Brautigan’s emotional health was further impacted by chronic alcoholism. His body was found on October 25, 1984; his telephone message machine was filled with calls of concern from those who loved him. He was cremated.
